Yoga And The Chiroprator: A Beautiful Partnership

I have a Chiropractor appointment coming up next week and I am stoked!  It has been a year and a half since I last saw a Chiro and believe me when I say my body will be happy.  I have been receiving Chiropractic care for a long time.  I used to joke that I needed to marry a Chiropractor (actually I still joke that my husband should become one).  Anyway, I am very much looking forward to being able to do yoga properly again.

I hate going to the doctor.  They charge to much, they are never on time, they constantly misdiagnose, they throw pills at the symptom without finding the cause, they poke and prod you… I could go on, but I think you get the point.  That being said, the one kind of medical care I do believe in is Chiropractic.  There is nothing better than finding a good Chiropractor and having them put your skeleton back where it should be.  A lot of people get a massage at the same time, but I don’t really like people touching me that long so it’s not my thing.

What does seeing a Chiropractor have to do with Yoga?  Yoga brings awareness to the practitioner, both on a mental and physical level.  There is nothing like yoga to make you feel just how out of whack your body is.  It is very difficult to go into an all out bind smoothly when your shoulder pops 4 times before you get the pose, and warrior #3 is very difficult when the misalignment in your hip is putting unnecessary strain on your knee.  Contrariwise, there is nothing better than doing yoga after an alignment and discovering how much more mobility you have.  Long term Yoga can actually retrain your muscles to hold you in proper alignment for longer.  This makes it easier to tell subtle shifts in body alignment, so you can be adjusted before any pain may set in.
