Hemp and Hemp Milk, Still On The Fence

So the other day we went out for coffee and the milk alternatives this particular place had were soy, almond, and hemp.  I almost always go for coconut and if they don’t have that, almond.  I have read a few things about the health benefits of hemp foods, and decided, why not, I’ll give it a go.  The first thing I noticed was a slight vanilla-ish nutty flavor, not quite like almond but similar.  There was no coffee or anything mixed with it, just a sprinkle of cinnamon, and it had a more creamy texture than you get with some steamed non-dairy milks (though as always that may have been because the barista knew her stuff).  I have had hemp in granola before and it reminded me of that flavor.

It took me a while to get past the association I have with hemp to some other uses that I cannot get behind, no matter the arguments.  I will however say I am going to limit my ingestion of hemp milk until they are able to prove that there is absolutely no THC transferred.  It has been proven there is not enough to cause unwanted effects other forms do, but I still would prefer not having that stuff in my body at all.

Hemp does appear to be full of Omegas, vitamins and minerals.  There have been some studies showing hemp is good for circulation because of it’s anti-inflammatory properties, as well as promoting heart health and supporting the immune system.
